Trudeau's accomplishment as prime minister was, of course, that he made Canadians pay attention to him from coast to coast. There was a lot of opposition to him and his majorities outside of Québec were not large -- he never swept the country, most certainly not in the West. But even those who disliked him -- and there were people who really just about hated him in the West, during some of the great oil and gas wars -- respected him. That was never doubted that he was an individual of substance. What remains is the memory of someone who dared to be excellent, and that is very un-Canadian -- we don't like to go for broke. And we all know that for fifteen or so years we were ruled by a leader who is a good as anybody in the world.
